Evolution of an Illustration

For our next children's book "Bettina Creates a Garden", we needed a creative page where some story text could go. Here's the artistic evolution of this illustration page.

We developed the idea of having a page with a collage of painted borders that could surround the text. We would use a previously painted panel by Jean that was filled with plants and flowers and then Jean would add to that with similarly themed artwork.

Here's Jean painting a rose-inspired panel and a flower design painted by Jean in various shades of orange. The illustration page continues with some drawings of stone dog and ship columns.

Here's the final version of the border of illustrations. The text will eventually be situated on the blue section. Not your usual children's book design, but definitely a unique original.
